PROJECT DESCRIPTION
  • Located at the intersection of Wilshire Blvd & Cannon Drive just down the street from Ferrari and Porsche, 9378 Wilshire is a 9,500-square-foot auto showroom for an electrical car manufacturer. Telsa is currently the only automaker building and selling highway-capable EVs in serial production and this would be only their third freestanding showroom.

  • The building management had previously not found a permanent tenant and offered the space at a very low rate but only for a limited period of time. The goal of the project was to maintain the raw industrial quality of the interior and create a dramatic insertion that could have high impact but would be of minimal cost and could be removed and reassembled elsewhere. Another key goal was to use materials that are sustainable, recyclable and minimize material waste. The physical form of “the Coil” is an aggregation of 305 waterjet cut folded 16 gauge steel panels that will be preassembled offsite into 34 transportable components, site assembly should last only 2 weeks, creating an easily adaptable design that taps into the potential for mass customization.

  • This project is the latest development in an ongoing area of research into tessellated structures and their ability to produce interesting structural, thermal, visual performances and expedited means of construction.
